Last week people came together from across the Harrogate District to celebrate the impact of THE LOCAL FUND which awarded £42,331 in grants to 19 local organisations working to make a difference in the community. The “Give Back in Harrogate District” event was a reminder of the real value of local giving, with stories shared by groups about the real impact funding made on local people’s lives.

Celia McKeon, Chief Executive of Two Ridings Community Foundation, opened the event by highlighting the range of projects that THE LOCAL FUND has supported.

“These grants go right to the heart of our community, from tackling food poverty to supporting people affected by pregnancy loss, or even creating spaces like a pond-dipping platform for children to explore nature.” She also stressed the importance of supporting the everyday running costs of these organisations, ensuring they can keep their doors open and continue their vital work. Celia summed up saying, “You might look around and think this is a pretty ordinary group of people, but this is a room full of people who give their time and skill to transform lives. They bring relief, care, support, friendship, joy, creativity, and connection. They are extraordinary.”

At the heart of the evening were stories shared by three grant recipients, showing how THE LOCAL FUND’s support helps real people across the Harrogate district. Michelle from Resurrected Bites described how their community groceries serve around 300 households, providing food and dignity to families in need. “Our community groceries are a lifeline, ensuring food reaches families and fills bellies—not bins,” she said.

Duncan from Dacre Banks Bowling Club spoke about the role of the club in fostering friendships, while Louise from Time Together shared how their initiative helps autistic adults and people with disabilities gain confidence and skills. For each of these groups, THE LOCAL FUND’s flexible support has been crucial.

The evening also recognised the role of local donors and businesses in making THE LOCAL FUND’s grants possible. Liz Wild from McInroy & Wood and a trustee of Two Ridings expressed her pride in being part of the fund. She spoke about the value of knowing her donation reaches those who need it most. “A small amount can make a huge difference” Liz noted.

Cllr Sam Gibbs from North Yorkshire Council confirmed this, thanking all who support the fund, including those who contribute through THE LOCAL LOTTO, where a portion of every ticket sale goes directly into the fund. “Community groups are the lifeblood of Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, and beyond,” he said, acknowledging THE LOCAL FUND’s role in sustaining these organisations throughout local towns and rural communities.

Since 2017, THE LOCAL FUND has supported community groups and charities across the Harrogate District by making over 147 grants and investing over £397,000. THE LOCAL FUND ensures that essential services can continue to meet the needs of local people.

This year’s 19 recipients include organisations tackling various issues and enhancing the lives of people across the district.  Artizan International will use its grant to provide workshops for disabled residents, combining creativity and wellbeing support. Essential Needs will provide bedding for children living in poverty to ensure every child has a warm, safe place to sleep. Samaritans of Harrogate & District and Wellspring Therapy will use their funds to continue their mental health services.

These grants  provide stability to organisations by covering core costs, allowing them to focus on their work year-round. As Celia said, “These grants are more than just funding—they’re the foundation for a stronger, more connected Harrogate, where everyone has a chance to thrive.”
