Building a community at the Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre

Imagine a place where friendships are formed over tea and cake, stories are generously shared, laughter fills every space and everyone is welcomed. This is the space that the Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre has created; a safe and welcoming environment for those over 50, offering companionship, support, and a vibrant social community.

A hub for connecting

The Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre was created to tackle the challenges of loneliness and isolation that many older people face daily. With a membership of around 100 people, the Centre provides a space for those seeking meaningful connections and engaging activities. Each week, members gather at The Queen Street Methodist Church Hall in Scarborough to take part in a variety of social and leisure activities that promote health, wellbeing, and independence.

Life starts at 50

There is always something happening to keep members active and help them build in confidence. From art classes and fitness sessions to day trips, bowling, lunches, walks, bingo, crafts, board games, and special events, the activities are designed to bring people together and encourage them to engage with their communities.

One of the highlights was a recent day trip to the Yorkshire Dales, funded by a generous £1,960 grant from the Small Grants Fund. 65 members enjoyed a day filled with laughter and camaraderie, including a visit to the Brynmor Ice Cream Factory, afternoon tea at Bolton Castle, and a cheese-making demonstration at Wensleydale Cheese. This trip was more than just a day out; it became a journey of healing and connection, reminding everyone that life’s best bits are often found in its shared moments, and that age is merely a number when it comes to creating unforgettable memories.

Combatting loneliness in the community

Loneliness is a growing concern in today’s society, particularly among older adults. In the UK, 1.4 million older people often find themselves isolated, struggling to find meaningful connections in their communities. The Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre addresses this issue by creating a space where they can find friendship, enjoyment, and a sense of belonging.

By bringing people together, the Centre is helping to reduce loneliness and build a stronger, more connected community for everyone.

Bernard Dungworth, one of the founders of the Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre shared with us:

“We started the Scarborough Over 50s Friendship Centre to bring people together and tackle loneliness in our local community. Thanks to the Small Grants Fund, we’ve been able to do what we love and create some wonderful memories. We’re truly grateful for the support.”
