How Chocolate & Co is unwrapping potential by removing barriers to employment
Chocolate & Co is a York-based charity that provides training and employment opportunities for individuals who have faced significant challenges, including addiction, homelessness, or involvement with the criminal justice system. By offering structured training placements, this inspiring organisation helps people build confidence, acquire valuable skills, and have a chance to rebuild their lives.
Filling the gaps
Addiction, homelessness, and criminality often leave individuals isolated and stigmatised. Many beneficiaries have experienced chaotic lives with little structure, a situation worsened by the pandemic’s disruption to support networks. Employers are often reluctant to consider candidates with complex backgrounds, leaving people with few opportunities to reintegrate into their communities. Chocolate & Co addresses this gap by equipping beneficiaries with the skills, qualifications, and emotional support they need to succeed.
From bean to barista
Chocolate & Co’s volunteer training placements provide beneficiaries with a comprehensive experience in a supportive café environment. Key aspects of the programme include:
- Certified barista training in a busy city centre café
- Food hygiene and allergen awareness qualifications
- Hands on experience in customer service, till operation, and teamwork
- Up to 30 hours of coaching, including help obtaining ID, travel costs, and counselling
This structured approach allows beneficiaries to gain practical skills and confidence while also enjoying free meals and emotional support during their placement.
The impact of funding
With the help of a grant from the Bettys and Taylors Group Community Fund, Chocolate & Co has been able to continue its incredible work. The funding has covered essential costs such as staff support, uniforms, travel, and training, ensuring that more people can access this opportunity.
Since launching in April 2024, the program has already made a significant impact. Seven individuals have participated, with two completing the program and moving into external employment, while four have secured paid positions at Chocolate & Co. Even those who were unable to complete the program have been given the opportunity to return when they are ready.
A future full of opportunity
Chocolate & Co isn’t just about training—it’s about transformation. With continued support, the organisation aims to expand its reach, offering more placements and developing partnerships with businesses across different sectors.
