Accessible and inclusive swimming in Scarborough
Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group (SDSG) is a charity dedicated to providing accessible swimming sessions for people with disabilities of any age, as well as for those aged 50 and over and their families in Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, and surrounding communities. Established in 1974, SDSG has grown to be one of the largest disabled swimming groups in the country, welcoming an average of 25 participants to its fortnightly sessions at the Scarborough Sports Village. Each session is designed to cater to various physical, sensory, and behavioural needs in a supportive environment.
SDSG is about more than just swimming; it’s about fostering connection, achievement, and inclusion. A single entry fee covers engaging activities such as Aquafit, the NASCH Distance Badge, and the Waterskills Award Scheme. With access to specialized aquatic equipment and therapeutic toys, participants can enjoy the water in a way that suits them best.
Strengthening SDSG
Swimming is far more than a recreational activity. Research by Swim England emphasises that swimming enhances physical health, mental well-being, and social inclusion. For individuals with disabilities, these sessions provide essential opportunities for movement, relaxation, and personal development within a supportive community.
A £2,000 grant enabled SDSG to launch its Volunteer Training and Development Project, equipping volunteers with knowledge and skills:
- 10 volunteers completed Makaton training to improve communication
- Two volunteers qualified as certified swim instructors
- Two others completed the Swim School health & safety course
This investment in training has significantly increased SDSG’s capacity, allowing them to offer structured swim lessons to more participants, resulting in an additional 345 teaching hours per year. Volunteers are now equipped with the confidence, knowledge, and skills to deliver high-quality support tailored to each individual’s needs.
Making a difference: Meet James and Oliver
When James first joined SDSG in 2022, he was apprehensive about entering the water. Diagnosed with Down syndrome, he required extra encouragement to build his confidence. Today, thanks to SDSG’s dedicated volunteers, James is thriving—developing his mobility, gaining independence, and enjoying swimming with his family.
For Oliver, who has autism, participating in group activities was initially challenging. Over time, the inclusive and structured nature of SDSG’s sessions has helped him grow in confidence. He now eagerly participates in swimming games, interacts with others, and even enjoys going underwater, demonstrating remarkable personal progress.
The future
Looking ahead, SDSG aims to expand its services, offering more sessions and reaching even more individuals who could benefit from their work. Richard from SDSG shared his experience accessing grant funding:
“Applying for funding was straightforward, and the support we received has been invaluable. The grant has allowed us to train our volunteers, enhance our sessions, and ultimately change lives. With ongoing support, we can continue to grow and offer more opportunities for people to experience the many benefits of swimming.”
By supporting organisations like SDSG, grant funding helps build stronger, healthier communities, ensuring that more people can enjoy activities that promote well-being and inclusion.
