Supporting independence and empowering futures with the Step Change Fund
Yatton House in Great Ayton is dedicated to supporting adults with learning and physical disabilities. For over 43 years they have provided a welcoming environment where people grow, connect and thrive. With a recent Step Change grant, Yatton House has expanded its services, bringing more opportunities to empower its members.
Growth and connection
At Yatton House, 26 adults aged between 22 and 60 participate in a weekly programme that promote independence, inclusion, and personal growth. Through a wide variety of activities tailored to each individual’s needs, members build life skills, social connections, and a sense of community. The centre offers a “Walk and Talk” initiative, where members explore their local surroundings, engage with local people and learn more about their community. This interaction bridges connections beyond the centre, fostering inclusion and mutual understanding.
Impact of the Step Change Fund
With funding from the Step Change Fund, Yatton House has extended staffing support, enabling a team member to dedicate more time each week to their Learning Pathways project. This helps the team plan activities around members’ needs and goals, offering opportunities to develop new skills and enhance abilities. Each member is enrolled on one of the Learning Pathways, designed and structured to meet specific health and social outcomes:
- Wellbeing – Group activities delivered through a therapeutic approach.
- Independence – Aimed at building confidence and ability to live more independently.
- Enterprise – Develop workplace skills leading to volunteering and employment opportunities.
Members track their progress through the Leaf Awards system, giving them a visible way to celebrate their achievements and build self-confidence. The programme’s tailored approach has increased members’ engagement and sense of purpose, creating a positive environment for personal development for everyone.
Chris Reeve, from Yatton House, shared with us…
“The application process was straightforward, and the support we received was incredible. Working with Two Ridings has been inspiring, as they truly understand our vision. Their support empowers us to plan for a future where every member has the opportunity to thrive.”
Stories of success
The impact of the Learning Pathways project is evident in the success stories of Yatton House’s members.
One member, who followed the Enterprise Pathway, gained the confidence to apply for a voluntary role at a horse riding centre for children and young people with learning disabilities. With support from the team at Yatton House, he secured the position and now volunteers there on days he does not attend the centre. This really highlights the programme’s effectiveness and shows that learning disabilities are not a barrier to making meaningful contributions to society.
Yatton House continues to deliver inclusive, skill-building activities that enable young adults with disabilities to reach their full potential. By focusing on independence, community engagement, and personal growth, Yatton House is creating brighter futures for its members—one pathway at a time.
