Creating a supportive environment for siblings of children with additional needs

The Sibling Group is a dedicated charity in Harrogate, providing essential support to children aged 6 to 11 who have siblings with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Founded by Grace Williams, who has personal experience of the challenges faced by these families, the group offers a safe, nurturing space where children can express themselves, connect with others and enjoy being children.

A safe space for fun and friendships

Children with siblings who have special needs often face unique challenges, including social and emotional isolation and having to cope with difficult situations from a young age. The Sibling Group addresses this, offering monthly sessions and ad hoc trips where children can relax, socialise and have fun in an environment designed specifically for them. The group engages around 30 children with activities that are not only enjoyable but also help them build social skills, confidence, and lasting friendships.

Each session is thoughtfully led by a qualified and experienced teacher, alongside a team of dedicated volunteers. Funding has enabled the purchase of a wide range of engaging and fun resources, ensuring each session is as beneficial and fun. Additionally, it has allowed for external professionals to be hired, such as artists, teachers, and wellbeing experts to deliver some of the sessions, enriching the siblings’ experiences further.

Growth and happiness

The impact of The Sibling Group on the young people is clear. They have grown in confidence, built meaningful relationships and found happiness in spending time with others who understand their experiences. Families, too, appreciate the opportunity for their children to take a break from the challenges they face at home, allowing them to focus on their own wellbeing.

Here are a few words from some of the children and their families:

Amaya, aged 6, shared, “I love The Sibling Group as I like playing with my friends.”

Her mum added, “It gives Amaya time away from her brother to focus on herself, and as a parent, it’s also a great opportunity to spend one-on-one time with her brother Ethan.”

Alice, aged 9, said, “It’s really fun. The people are really nice, and it’s great to be with people who have the same life as me. I love the different activities.”

Bright futures ahead

The Sibling Group is committed to continuing its support for children, ensuring they have a place to grow and connect.

Founder Grace Williams shared with us:

“At The Sibling Group, we work to create a safe and meaningful space for children who often feel overlooked. The generous grant has allowed us to keep our sessions going, bringing smiles to so many children and giving them the chance to just be themselves. We are deeply thankful for the funding, which makes this all possible.”
